Forest road stabilization
Forest roads fail exactly when they are needed most: in the wet seasons, when timber extraction must continue, the clay in the road bed turns to mud and loaded trucks cut deep ruts. ROAD//STABILIZR® and DUST/BLOKR® are a suitable solution for forest road stabilization, validated by Cypher Environmental's international experience on access and haul roads.
For forest estate managers, the decisive argument is the environmental profile: both products are biodegradable, non-toxic and non-corrosive, and can be used even in protected areas and Natura 2000 sites, where chlorides and conventional binders raise problems.

Forest road networks combine seasonal heavy traffic, rough terrain and strict environmental restrictions.
Mud and ruts that stop extraction
Clay road beds lose bearing capacity when wet: loaded timber trucks get stuck and extraction schedules slip.
Costly regravelling in rough terrain
Hauling aggregates over narrow mountain or hill roads disproportionately inflates the cost of any conventional maintenance work.
Environmental restrictions in the forest estate
In protected areas and Natura 2000 sites, toxic or corrosive products (including the chlorides traditionally used against dust) are hard or impossible to get accepted.
Erosion on slopes and at culverts
Water washing over an unstabilized surface carries material into valleys and streams and quickly degrades climbing sections.

The solution
The solution: a stabilized layer from the material already in the road
In-situ stabilization suits remote sites precisely because it needs no new aggregates and is executed with standard road equipment.

ROAD//STABILIZR® modifies the clay particles in the road bed, which become strongly and semi-permanently bonded and lock the existing aggregates in place. The resulting layer has increased density, stability and CBR value, reduced swelling and permeability, and remains stable through freeze-thaw cycles, which is essential for mountain roads. The product performs in both wet and dry conditions.
DUST/BLOKR® waterproofs the surface and controls dust in the dry season, with results that outlast chlorides and without their corrosive effect on machinery. Being organic, biodegradable and U.S. EPA Safer Choice certified, it is compatible with nearby streams, vegetation and wildlife in the forest estate.
We have not yet executed local projects on forest roads (our direct experience is on communal and county roads), but the procedure in the technical approval is the same, and Cypher Environmental applies these products internationally on access and haul roads carrying heavy traffic.
The procedure
The execution procedure, step by step
Adapted to forest estate conditions: standard equipment, no mixing plants or special machinery brought on site.

Preliminary laboratory testing
Identification of the road bed soil according to SR EN ISO 14688-2 and determination of dosages, which is essential where soils vary from one section to another.

Reprofiling and preparing the road bed
Scarifying the existing material, correcting the profile with drainage slopes towards ditches and culverts, and bringing the layer to optimum moisture.

Treatment with ROAD//STABILIZR®
Applied diluted in water, before compaction; 1 litre treats 33 m³ of compacted soil. No work in freezing conditions.

Treatment with DUST/BLOKR® and final compaction
Waterproofing the surface and controlling dust on sections trafficked in the dry season, followed by final compaction.

Opening to traffic
The road can be opened immediately after final compaction; timber haulage can continue without long technological breaks.

Do the products affect forest vegetation or watercourses?
No. ROAD//STABILIZR® and DUST/BLOKR® are biodegradable, non-toxic and non-corrosive; DUST/BLOKR® is U.S. EPA Safer Choice certified. The products can be used even in protected areas and Natura 2000 sites. MSDS sheets are available on request.
Have you executed works on forest roads in Romania?
Our reference projects so far are on communal and county roads. For forest roads we rely on Cypher Environmental's international experience on access and haul roads; the procedure in the technical approval is the same, and dosages are confirmed through laboratory tests on the soil from the site.
Does the stabilized layer withstand loaded timber trucks?
The treatment increases the density, stability and CBR value of the layer, and the semi-permanently bonded clay locks the aggregates in place. Exact sizing is based on preliminary laboratory tests and the estimated traffic.
What machinery has to be brought to a remote site?
Only standard road equipment: a grader, a water truck with a spray bar and a compactor. No mixing plants or specialized machinery are needed, which matters on hard-to-reach sites.
