Dust control on haul roads and in quarries: a practical guide
Why water and chlorides do not solve the dust problem in the long run, and how DUST/BLOKR®, the organic solution certified U.S. EPA Safer Choice, works on haul roads, in quarries and on stockpiles.

Dust is not just a nuisance. On a haul road in a quarry or a gravel pit, the cloud raised by every dump truck means reduced visibility and accident risk, accelerated wear of engines and filters, fine material permanently lost from the road surface and, increasingly often, complaints from neighbouring communities and environmental obligations imposed through permits.
This article reviews the usual dust control methods, their limits and the working principle of DUST/BLOKR®, the Cypher Environmental product we officially distribute in Romania and the Republic of Moldova.
What a "dusty" road is actually losing
Dust is the fine fraction of the running surface: precisely the natural binder that keeps the aggregates locked together. Every time wind and traffic lift it into the air, the surface is left coarser, more permeable and easier to dislodge. The process feeds itself: the more fine material the road loses, the faster it degrades and the more dust it generates. That is why dust control is not merely a matter of comfort or environment, but a direct measure of surface preservation and of reducing regrading frequency.
The classic methods and their limits
Watering
The most widespread method is also the least durable: the effect disappears with evaporation, that is, within hours; in summer even within tens of minutes. The water truck has to run continuously, water consumption is high, and on clayey roads an over-wetted surface becomes slippery.
Chlorides (calcium chloride, magnesium chloride)
Hygroscopic salts retain moisture from the air and bind dust temporarily. Their problems are well known in the industry: they are corrosive to machinery and steel structures, they gradually wash away with rain and require reapplication, and their migration into the soil and surface waters raises environmental concerns, which is why their use is increasingly hard to justify in sensitive areas.
How DUST/BLOKR® works
DUST/BLOKR® is presented by Cypher Environmental as a revolutionary alternative to traditional salts and chlorides: an organic, biodegradable, non-toxic and non-corrosive product with zero environmental impact. The product is certified U.S. EPA Safer Choice and complies with the Boeing BSS7432 standard, the reference used in the aviation industry for materials that come into contact with corrosion-sensitive equipment.
Compared with typical chlorides, the results are more durable: performance is maintained in both rain and drought, and the treated surface does not become slippery when wet, since the product reactivates with moisture. Its semi-soluble nature reduces the need for frequent reapplication, which fundamentally changes the economics of maintenance compared with watering or saline solutions.
A practical advantage that should not be overlooked: the product works on almost any type of material present in the road surface, and the application rate is adjusted according to the material and traffic intensity.
Application on site
Application requires nothing specialised, just standard equipment:
- Surface spraying: the product is diluted in water and applied with a water truck fitted with a spray bar, onto the existing surface, without stopping operations.
- Incorporation during regrading: for an in-depth effect, the product is incorporated into the top 5–7.5 cm of the surface, together with regrading the road with a motor grader.
The choice between the two options and the exact dosage are established according to the surface material, the traffic and the client's objective, which can range from simple dust suppression to waterproofing the surface. In the procedure covered by the technical approval for stabilization, DUST/BLOKR® is applied after treating the soil with ROAD//STABILIZR®, completing the stabilization with a waterproofed wearing layer.
Where it is applied
The range of surfaces the product is designed for covers practically everything that generates dust in an operation:
- mining and quarry haul roads;
- access roads and unpaved municipal roads;
- parking lots and industrial platforms;
- runways and helipads;
- waste dumps and material stockpiles (wind erosion control);
- areas with erosion problems.
In Romania we have carried out maintenance, stabilization and ecological waterproofing works on communal and county roads; for industrial applications (mining, platforms, helipads), the solutions are recommended based on Cypher's international experience, and the application parameters are confirmed through preliminary testing on each project.
Quick comparison table
| Criterion | Water | Chlorides | DUST/BLOKR® | | --- | --- | --- | --- | | Duration of effect | Hours | Weeks, decreases with rain | Durable; performance maintained in rain and drought | | Equipment corrosion | No | Yes, significant | Non-corrosive | | Environment | High water consumption | Salt migration into soil and waters | Organic, biodegradable, zero impact | | Surface when wet | Slippery on clays | Can become slippery | Does not become slippery; reactivates with moisture | | Equipment | Water truck | Water truck / spreader | Water truck with spray bar or motor grader |
How to scope a dust control programme
For an accurate quote, a client needs to be able to describe: the length and width of the sections to be treated, the type of surface material, the estimated daily traffic (number and tonnage of vehicles) and the objective pursued (dust suppression, waterproofing or both). Based on this data we establish the application rate, the placement method and the estimated refresh frequency. Delivery is made in 20 L containers or 1,000 L IBCs, directly from the manufacturer, and prices are communicated on request.
Conclusion
Watering treats the symptom for a few hours; chlorides treat it with hidden costs in corrosion and environmental impact. DUST/BLOKR® attacks the problem differently: it durably binds the fine fraction, keeps the material in the road and does so with a product certified U.S. EPA Safer Choice, safe for machinery, people and neighbouring communities.
