Rehabilitation of Stadionului Street in Afumați, Ilfov County, carried out by the Sistem Construct 2007 SRL + Alma Architecture SRL joint venture. The foundation layer was built by ecologically stabilizing the existing material with ROAD//STABILIZR® and DUST/BLOKR®, without importing foreign aggregates.
Project context
Stadionului Street in Afumați, on the outskirts of Bucharest, carries constant local traffic and required a durable rehabilitation. The clay-rich soils in the area are highly water-sensitive: they lose bearing capacity in wet periods, and repeated maintenance with conventional methods becomes costly.
The works were awarded through public tender to the Sistem Construct 2007 SRL + Alma Architecture SRL joint venture, which proposed the ecological stabilization of the existing material instead of replacing it with quarried aggregates.
The applied solution
The procedure from the technical approval was applied: preliminary laboratory testing to identify the soil, followed by treating the layer with ROAD//STABILIZR® (which modifies the clay particles and turns them into a flexible binder that locks the aggregates in place) and then with DUST/BLOKR® for waterproofing and surface protection.
Mixing, adjusting to optimum moisture content and compaction were performed with standard road equipment, using the in-situ material. The procedure allowed traffic to be reopened immediately after final compaction.
The result
The street received a homogeneous, dense, water-resistant stabilized layer built entirely from local material. The solution reduced the volume of hauled aggregates and gave the commune a structure that is stable through freeze–thaw cycles, with significantly lower maintenance costs than a conventional gravel surface.
The works were accepted following the standard procedure, with a performance guarantee.
